LGBTQ Organizations and Services
The Trevor Project - A nationwide organization that maintains the TrevorLifeline (a hotline for LGBTQ kids in crisis and/or who are considering suicide), TrevorChat (an instant messaging service that lets teens talk with and ask questions of trained, supportive volunteers); and TrevorSpace (a safe social network for LGBTQ teens).
The Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network (GLSEN) - This organization's mission is to foster a safe school climate for all students nationwide and to ensure that students are "valued and respected regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression." Among their activities are registering and helping to develop gay-straight alliances (GSAs), sponsoring the National Day of Silence and No Name-Calling Week, and holding workshops for educators.
Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) - A national organization dedicated to supporting parents, families, friends, and allies of LGBTQ people, and helping them adjust to, understand, and support their LGBTQ loved ones. Their mission is to "create a world in which our young people may grow up with freedom from fear of violence, bullying, and other forms of discrimination."
The It Gets Better Project - This amazing on-line site contains videos made by LGBTQ people of various ages and all walks of life in which they tell their stories of overcoming prejudice, bullying, harassment, and other forms of discrimination and misunderstanding, and how they found that, as times went on, their lives really did get better. There are also supportive videos provided by well-known straight allies and statements from celebrities and other well-known people--for example, President Obama, Hilary Clinton, Ellen DeGeneris--plus groups like the Broadway Community, the Facebook staff, etc.
Rainbow
Rumpus - an on-line magazine for children and teens growing
up in LGBT families; it features stories, reviews, news,
games--lots of neat stuff!
Children of Lesbians and Gays Everywhere (COLAGE) - An organization, nationwide, for people who have one or more LGBTQ parent, with the purpose of developing community and working toward a world in which all kinds of families are valued and respected.
