Book reviews, award information, author links, and more. authors4teens.com - author interviews, bibliographies, scheduled appearances, etc. A wonderful site for teachers, librarians, and their institutions as well as for teens. Access is by subscription only, but a 30-day free trial is available. Children's Book Council - nonprofit organization whose purpose is to encourage literacy and the enjoyment of children's books. Lots of news about books, authors, illustrators, publishing, educational programs, etc. Children's Literature Resources - an award-winning site with tons of author, illustrator, book, and writing information. Cynthia Leitich Smith - a site full of information: resources in children's and young adult literature, author interviews, tips on writing, and more. Institute of Children's Literature - articles, tips, chats, interviews, plus information about their correspondence course in writing for children. Kerlan Collection - a site describing the collection at the University of Minnesota of 90,000-plus children's books, and manuscripts and illustrations for more than 10,000 children's books, plus other items related to children's literature. The Manuscript Workshop - information about author-illustrator-teacher Barbara Seuling's excellent workshops in writing children's books and stories; the workshops are for adults. The Purple Crayon - a goldmine of information about writing and publishing children's material from children's book editor Harold Underdown. Lots of links, lots of great information. The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators - information for people who write or illustrate or are otherwise involved with children's literature, with many author and illustrator links. Teens Read Too - a website for teens, containing book reviews, author information, award lists, contests, and lots more. LGBTQ Organizations and Services The Trevor Project - A nationwide organization that maintains the TrevorLifeline (a hotline for LGBTQ kids in crisis and/or who are considering suicide), TrevorChat (an instant messaging service that lets teens talk with and ask questions of trained, supportive volunteers); and TrevorSpace (a safe social network for LGBTQ teens). The Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network (GLSEN) - This organization's mission is to foster a safe school climate for all students nationwide and to ensure that students are "valued and respected regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression." Among their activities are registering and helping to develop gay-straight alliances (GSAs), sponsoring the National Day of Silence and No Name-Calling Week, and holding workshops for educators. Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) - A national organization dedicated to supporting parents, families, friends, and allies of LGBTQ people, and helping them adjust to, understand, and support their LGBTQ loved ones. Their mission is to "create a world in which our young people may grow up with freedom from fear of violence, bullying, and other forms of discrimination." The It Gets Better Project - This amazing on-line site contains videos made by LGBTQ people of various ages and all walks of life in which they tell their stories of overcoming prejudice, bullying, harassment, and other forms of discrimination and misunderstanding, and how they found that, as times went on, their lives really did get better. There are also supportive videos provided by well-known straight allies and statements from celebrities and other well-known people--for example, President Obama, Hilary Clinton, Ellen DeGeneris--plus groups like the Broadway Community, the Facebook staff, etc. Rainbow Rumpus - an on-line magazine for children and teens growing up in LGBT families; it features stories, reviews, news, games--lots of neat stuff! Children of Lesbians and Gays Everywhere (COLAGE) - An organization, nationwide, for people who have one or more LGBTQ parent, with the purpose of developing community and working toward a world in which all kinds of families are valued and respected. Office for Intellectual Freedom, American Library Association - the organization that sponsors Banned Books Week and keeps records of challenges and bannings to books in the nation's libraries. National Coalition Against Censorship - this organization campaigns against censorship attempts of all kinds. Kid Speak - is a site on which kids speak out about censorship, describe their experiences, and work to combat it. Elaine
